Wu-Tang Clan - Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuthing Ta Fuck Wit Like so many tracks from the era, the choice of sample material broke new ground, placing lush passages of Billy Cobham's Rhodesy Jazz Fusion over rolling drums.ġ4. And it seems Souls of Mischief knew in the moment that the nine tré would be a year to remember, celebrating its glory in an anthem which put both the group and the East Oakland underground on the map. In fact, one quarter of the tracks on this list were released that year. If you weren't aware already, 1993 was quite a year for Hip Hop. The pairing of the cut's dark lyrical content, which deals with topics including the stress of the street life and mental illness, finds its catchy backdrop in the form of Isaac Hayes 'Hung Up on My Baby' from 1974's 'Tough Guys' soundtrack. At that time Houston's Rap-a-Lot label and their flagship act the Geto Boys were already well established, but 'Mind Playing Tricks on Me' was the anthem that elevated both the group and the label in the public consciousness, comfortably rubbing shoulders with the best New York and LA had to offer. Viewing the Hip Hop landscape in 2020, it's hard to remember a time when the South was not a major component in the US Hip Hop sound, but back in 1991 it was principally New York and LA vying for the attention of the Hip Hop consumer. The arrangement places a subtle Grant Green guitar lick alongside the tapping rimshots of Bill Withers, emphasized by a lush string arrangement for cinematic effect.ġ6. The song itself also refuses to conform, shunning the 3.5 minute rap song standard to produce a spralling 12 minute opus in two movements. Kendrick Lamar's 'Sing About Me.' bucks that trend however as one of only two tracks on the list not released in the '90s. It's safe to say there's a heavy bias in this list in favour of the classic samples of Hip Hop's fastest evolving decade, the 1990s. Kendrick Lamar - Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst In '93 RZA broke new ground with his choice of sample material, replacing the well seasoned Funk riffs plundered in the late 80s and the Jazz licks over which his East Coast counterparts obsessed in favour of melancholy Soul, which he delivered with an unexpected grimy edge.ġ7. Tracks like Tearz aren't just popular because they're great records, but also because of what they represent in the history of sample based Hip Hop. Without wishing to drop any spoilers, this is not the first entry on this list for either RZA or Wu-Tang Clan or indeed tracks from their debut album. The instrumental formed the back drop to Big L and Jay-Z's now infamous Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Freestyle in '95 and in recent years the track has been sampled more than once by Logic.

There's little doubt the popularity of the track has been amplified over time by a number of notable reappropriations of the beat. New Jersey spitter Miilkbone is without doubt one of the less recognisable names on this list, but his 1994 single 'Keep It Real' is a worthy entry on the list. He's been sampled close to 100 times by artists including The Firm and Masta Ace, but it's his original songs rather than samplable moments that have yielded most influence - he's been covered over 150 times by artists as diverse as Ray Charles, Marc Almond and Elton John. French singer / lyricist (and diplomat!) Charles Aznavour does not rank among the most heavily sampled artists on the site, but his statistics are not unimpressive. Dre production appears on this list and that it's a low ranking entry, although an honourable mention goes to 'Nuthin' But A G Thang' which sits just outside the list at #21. It's something of a surprise that only one Dr. Dre feat Eminem & Xzibit - What's the Diference The following list runs through the 20 Top Rated Samples on the site, that is to say the sample listings with the highest number of 5 Star community ratings.Ĭheck out our playlist of the all of the featured tracks and their samples on Mixcloud below or read on for the complete run down:Ģ0. 'Greatest' is of course a subjective measure, so rather than select our personal favourites we've deferred to the opinions of the WhoSampled community. We've put together many Top 10 Most Sampled lists over the years, but here we shift the focus slightly for a G.O.A.T list and just 10 selections didn't quite seem to do the list justice, so we've expanded the run down to 20 titles - The 20 Greatest Hip Hop Samples of All Time.
